Benfold came home to Everett after eight months in the Pacific

The Navy said the guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold returned to Naval Station Everett on Oct. 16 after more than eight months of operations. The ship left San Diego on Feb. 1, steamed more than 20,000 nautical miles across the 3rd and 7th Fleet areas, and worked with forces from Canada, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, including exercises Valiant Shield 2026 and Freedom Edge. Cmdr. Rebecca M. Conti-Vock, the commanding officer, said the crew integrated fast and executed national tasking. The official photo of the return was taken and posted the same day.

Providence says a fishing ban in the Central Arctic Ocean runs until 2037

Friday's Providence essay covers last month's agreement among the United States, Denmark, and Greenland on Arctic security. It notes a 2017 deal by ten countries, including the United States and Russia, to ban commercial fishing in the Central Arctic Ocean from 2021 to 2037 while the waters are studied. The piece treats that ocean, more than a million square miles of international water, as the next place Washington and Moscow will compete over fishing, shipping, and mining.

Special Operations is fielding a lighter half-mask and goggles

Defense News reported Friday that U.S. Special Operations forces will adopt Avon Protection's MITR half-mask and goggles after the Pentagon and the company announced a contract on Oct. 9. The system is meant to guard against chemical hazards, lead powder from gunfire, and drug-lab chemicals including fentanyl. Avon told Defense News the goggles and mask can be worn together or apart, and that some units are already wearing the gear. A November 2025 Special Operations Command cancer study, cited in the same piece, found operators face an 18 percent higher cancer risk than other personnel.

The Army cased the colors of the 8th Psychological Operations Group

Defense News reported Friday that the Army inactivated the 8th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) in a ceremony at Fort Bragg on Sept. 29. The Army's own release says Col. Robert Cusick and Command Sgt. Maj. Jason Montesanto cased the colors, and that inactivation keeps the unit's people and work inside the Psychological Operations Regiment rather than dissolving them. The group was formally activated on Nov. 16, 2013.

WORLD reports the Muellers still have no grave for Kayla

WORLD reports that Carl and Marsha Mueller wrote President Donald Trump on Nov. 6, 2025, before his meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, asking for help bringing their daughter home. ISIS took Kayla Mueller hostage in Syria on Aug. 4, 2013, and reported on Feb. 6, 2015, that she had been killed. The couple told WORLD they have no grave and no marker. The Foley Foundation, cited in the same piece, reports at least 38 American citizens held by terror groups or hostile governments.
