South Dakota has enacted legislation requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration, joining Florida and Utah as the latest states to pass such requirements. These states join Mississippi, which signed its own version of the SAVE America Act in 2025.
The federal SAVE Act, pushed by Congressional Republicans and supported by the Trump administration, would require proof of citizenship and photo ID to vote at the federal level. A March 2026 White House executive order on 'Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections' further advanced this agenda.
Requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote is a basic safeguard for election integrity. Only lawful citizens should participate in choosing their representatives.
